Rethinking animal models and human obesity.

چکیده
Human obesity is a complex phenomenon where economic, cultural, behavioral, and biological factors intersect in the physiological space. Developing animal models that capture several elements of the many potential interactions between these factors will only increase their translational value.

Biology of Obesity: Lessons from Animal Models of Obesity
Obesity is an epidemic problem in the world and is associated with several health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory failure, muscle weakness, and cancer. The precise molecular mechanisms by which obesity induces these health problems are not yet clear. To better understand the pathomechanisms of human disease, good animal models are essential. In this paper, we w...
متن کاملP119: Animal Models of Epilepsy: The Impact of some Chemoconvalsants on Animal Models
We summarize some of the most frequenthly used rodent animal models of temporal lobe epileps and the impact of chemoconvulsants on them. Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most common epilepsy in humans in which seizures spread to the neighboring cortiase and hippocampal neuron loss and other neuropathological take place. Temporal lobe epilepsy and the other form of epilepsy cannot acquired in chini...
متن کاملCauses of Obesity and Consequences of Obesity Prevention in Non-human Primates and Other Animal Models
Obesity develops slowly and spontaneously in some rodent strains and in non-human primates, with peak body weight reached in ‘middle-age’ or in older age. The animal models of obesity may be classified as: (a) spontaneous naturally occurring (of unknown genetic and physiologic cause(s)); (b) specific genetic models of known or unknown single gene mutations occurring spontaneously (and selected ...
متن کاملP-170: Animal Models of Human Artificial Ovary, Valuable Tools for Fertility Preservation in Cancer Patients
Background: With all the recent advances in cancer treatments, many young cancer patients find themselves facing the prospect of losing their fertility after aggressive chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Cryopreservation of ovarian cortical tissue has emerged as a potential option to restore fertility in these young women. Materials and Methods: Because autotransplantation of cryopreserved ovarian c...
متن کاملEstimating the predictive validity of diabetic animal models in rosiglitazone studies.
For therapeutic studies, predictive validity of animal models - arguably the most important feature of animal models in terms of human relevance - can be calculated retrospectively by obtaining data on treatment efficacy from human and animal trials. Using rosiglitazone as a case study, we aim to determine the predictive validity of animal models of diabetes, by analysing which models perform m...
